Empirical Labor Search: A Survey
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper surveys the existing empirical research that uses search theory to empirically analyze labor supply questions in a structural framework, using data on individual labor market transitions and durations, wages, and individual characteristics. The starting points of the literature are the Mincerian earnings function, Heckman’s classic selection model, and dynamic optimization theory. We develop a general framework for the labor market where the search for a job involves dynamic decision making under uncertainty. It can be specialized to be in agreement with most published research using labor search models. We discuss estimation, policy evaluation with the estimated model, equilibrium model versions, and the decomposition of wage variation into factors due to heterogeneity of various model determinants as well as search frictions themselves. We summarize the main empirical conclusions. ∗Tel Aviv University, the University of Minnesota and CEPR ([email protected]). †Department of Economics, Free University Amsterdam, IFAU, IFS, IZA, CREST, Tinbergen Institute, and CEPR ([email protected]). ICT Impact on the Labor Productivity in the Iranian Manufacturing Industries; a Multilevel Analysis
It is now evident in the literature that the information and communication technology (ICT) has a positive and significant impact on the productivity and economic growth. Most studies in this area, however, are limited to the developed countries. Given different regulations and economic conditions, and also an increasing trend in allocating resources to ICT in developing countries, it is import...

Job centers have an outstanding role in the process of labor force employment through cutting the costs of labor force adjustment. This paper studies the dynamic models of the labor force demand with the aim of pinpointing job centers role in labor market. According to the results, "job search and matching" approach better and more thoroughly considers the role of job centers in the labor marke...
متن کاملThe Job Search Intensity Supply Curve: How Labor Market Conditions Affect Job Search Effort
During the Great Recession of 2007, unemployment reached nearly 10 percent and the ratio of unemployment to open positions (as measured by the Help Wanted OnLine Index) more than tripled. The weak labor market prompted an unprecedented extension in the length of time in which a claimant can collect unemployment insurance (UI) to 99 weeks, at an expense to date of $226.4 billion. While many clai...
متن کاملFitting Social Capital, Informal Job Search, and Labor Market Outcomes in Hungary(1)
Although many studies examined the impact of (both accessed and mobilized) social capital on labor market outcomes, it is not clear what mechanisms are responsible for these "whom do you know" effects. The quest for mechanisms is important when one wishes to compare social capital effects across different societies. This paper explores the empirical implications of three mechanisms (extensive s...
متن کاملLabour and Poverty: Empirical Relationship Using House Data from South Nigeria
In Nigeria, most farming activities rely on family labor. However, rural-urban drift and the movement of young people away from agriculture are making labor increasingly pause. Thus, labor has become a major constraint to expanding the scope of production by small-scale resource poor farmers. This paper provides an empirical relationship between labor and poverty using data from households. Thr...
